WHAT TO EXPECT IN CLASS

“Out beyond ideas of right and wrong doing, there is a field.
I will meet you there.”

— Rumi

Open Floor is a dance and movement practice that is suitable for all ability levels. You are never too old to move. We support people to move in a way that accommodates different energy-levels, injuries or physical disabilities (including chairs for moving on).

Open Floor Movement Classes combines free-form movement and guided explorations, set to inspiring and provocative soundscapes.
In every class we make time for personal practice and open dance.

Every class begins with a warmup where we take time to tend to the needs of our bodies: warming and stretching our muscles and breathing our way into motion. Each class focuses on a particular theme. Often this is a movement skill that serves us as a resource both on and off the dance floor. Examples include: grounding, centring, releasing, activating, settling, moving towards and away… We also focus on particular parts of the body as entry points into our dance.

This is a non-verbal practice where we communicate through our bodies. You have freedom to seek solitude or connection. The classes usually end with a gentle settling phase so we have time to rest and integrate.

If it’s your first time read Tips for First-timers below.

Introducing

The teaching Team

Jacqui Chan

QUALIFIED OPEN FLOOR TEACHER (ICMTA)

I love the freedom and wild delight of dancing. I love the power of dance to enliven the physical body, free up emotions, draw me out of my mind, and connect with the larger mystery of life.

Dance has taught me to fully embrace the joys and challenges of life with the knowledge that everything moves. It has cast light on my edges and given me a platform to experience and express the full spectrum of my Self. It has inspired courage to show up in both my vulnerability and magnificence.

I feel blessed to share this fun transformative practice with others. My wish is that my classes offer people an opportunity to enjoy the aliveness of their bodies, to discover their own unique dance, and to feel part of a vibrant and soulful community. My teaching is driven by my passion for self-inquiry and somatic exploration, and draws on various threads from my life journey: yoga, taichi, art, meditation, self-inquiry and healing.

Lisa Corston

QUALIFIED OPEN FLOOR TEACHER (ICMTA)

My Dance and Art practices are breath to me. Enlivening and enriching, they provide wild exciting sustenance for my experience of being alive.

I love pushing and stretching the boundaries of who I am, expanding my movement vocabulary as I articulate and express myself and inner world with more clarity.  Through this dance practice I feel more at home within my own skin, a stonger sense of steadiness as I meet lifes constantly changing terrain, and I find myself smiling so much more, both outwardly and inwardly. I love the extraordinary friendships that have been born from connections on the dance floor and through the wider dance community, through these connections has come a nurturing sense of belonging.

I love the invitation to move and include whatever is present in any given moment on the Open Floor.  This means every gesture, each and every form of movement, is just right, exactly as it is, there is simply no wrong way of being and moving. The open floor offers full acceptance that every body moves with uniqueness, every dance is different and new, just as each and every moment we are alive is full of fresh potential.

WHAT TO BRING:

TIPS for First-Timers

“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well.
Just get up and dance.
Great dancers are great because of their passion. ”

— Martha Graham

Rest assured there are no moves to learn and nothing you can get wrong.

If you find yourself feeling awkward or self-conscious try:

  • feeling what body parts want to respond to the music and how they want to move.

  • focusing on how your movements feel inside your body, rather than how they look as a ‘dance’.

If you are in need of new movement inspiration, simply look around the room and try-on a move that captures your curiosity.

If it’s your first time come early so we can welcome you and have a chat. The space is ready with music 15mins before class.

All we ask of you is to stay for the full class duration.

Our dance community is warm, inclusive and supportive. We’d love you to join us.
