DUPANZ Reunion with a selection of dance leaders
September 16, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - September 18, 2022 @ 2:00 pm
This weekend of dances, song, chant, and celebration, held by NZ leaders, is time for yourself and time to connect with others, meeting old friends, and making new ones… The call goes out to all those who have ever danced, led dances, or never danced before. Newcomers are especially welcome! No experience needed. We invite you to bring instruments, dancing feet and hearts ready to fly!
What are the Dances of Universal Peace?
The Dances of Universal Peace are simple, meditative, joyous, multi-cultural circle dances that use sacred phrases, chants, music, and movements from the many traditions of the earth to touch the spiritual essence within ourselves and others. Based on the work begun in the late 1960s by Samuel L. Lewis, (Sufi Ahmed Murad Chishti, 1896 – 1971) they promote peace and integration within individuals and groups worldwide. In addition to his Sufi transmission, Murshid S.A.M. was acknowledged as Zen Master in the Rinzai tradition. He also studied Jewish and Christian mysticism, Hindu mysticism under Swami Papa Ramdas, and Mataji Krishnabai as well as many other sacred world traditions. The Dances reflect this universal heritage as well as Murshid Samuel Lewis’ commitment to “Peace through the Arts.” Samuel Lewis drew constant inspiration from his spiritual teachers, who, with him, have become revered with fondness as the ancestors of the Dances. Foremost among these were Pir-O-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan, (1882 – 1927), the Master who brought Sufism to the Western world in 1910. And Ruth St Denis, (1880 – 1968) the American dance pioneer and innovator who devoted her work to the embodiment in the dance of sacred figures and themes from many world spiritual traditions.
Dances of Universal Peace at Mana:
We are lovers of a dance of body prayer. The movement takes us into deep meditation and great joy. Singing our connections with the One and with each other. Movement, meditation, and song that joins us heart to heart. DUPANZ is our national organisation that supports the growth of Dances of Universal Peace in our beautiful land, Aotearoa New Zealand. A diverse group, we come from different homelands, have different interests, jobs, ages, and stages. Some of us live in towns, some in cities and some enjoy rural living and some live in mobile homes bringing the dances to our varied communities. Together we make up a spread out but loving heart community. Uniting us is the joy and fulfillment we get through the Dances of Universal Peace and the loose, yet loving connection that, at its best, truly unites us as family. Over the years our family commitment has grown to encompass not only the dances but our support of one another through life and in this process we have become a deeply connected circle.
