About Nia -What is Nia?
Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live. How does Nia work? Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations. Why was Nia created? Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own. Together we will unearth possibilities never before imagined.

Dr Jane, a participant from last year’s retreat, has this to say ~ “One doesn’t get that feeling of absolute contentment often enough – this Nia retreat has provided me with the most wonderful state of contentment, through its sensuous movement which also has invisible strengthening powers, facilitated by the greatest of teachers, full of wisdom and love. The group became connected with a welcoming warmth and friendships were easily made. Mana retreat provided the magical setting for this blissful experience. Ever grateful.”
The teaching Team
Helene Purcell Helene has been instrumental in teaching, creating and growing the Nia New Zealand community. Training the Nia White Belt in 2007, Nia’s first level of training, she has since attained Nia’s First Degree Black Belt travelling to Australia, USA, and Germany. Continuing her study of therapeutic movement practices Helene has trained in Dance Movement Therapy and Authentic Movement. Currently based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, she is creating another great Nia community in Noosa. With family roots in Coromandel NZ, Helene feels honoured to be presenting a Nia weekend retreat at Mana Retreat Centre, hosting and co-creating with Stephanie DeMay.
Stephanie DeMay On 26 March 2009, Stephanie stepped into her very first Nia class … Helene Purcell was her teacher! And now, almost 10 years later, Stephanie has attained the highest level of Nia training: Second Degree Black belt. She has created thriving Nia communities in both Christchurch and Rangiora, New Zealand; offering classes, workshops, new teacher mentoring, and fundraisers under her brand: Plensory Movement. Over the past couple of years, she has continued Helene’s vision to grow Nia New Zealand by producing a number of Nia pieces of training. Stephanie is also a certified yoga instructor and enjoys how yoga complements her Nia practice.
