The Retreat at Easter is a highlight in the Mana calendar and this year Rev Dr Stephanie Dowrick will also bring to the retreat her many years of experience encouraging people to develop their life-giving powers of creativity (energy, freshness, responsiveness) as well as the rewards of peaceful contemplation.
As always, the Retreat at Easter 2019 will offer morning guided meditation led by Stephanie, the rare chance for thoughtful discussion, periods of deep quiet, and an exquisite community gathering on Easter Sunday. Mana Retreat Centre itself brings you the gifts of nature’s sublime beauty and the beauty of acceptance and kindness. We will have inspirational teaching mornings, led by Stephanie and supported by Simon. Among the skills we will deepen are those of free writing, blessing the obstacle and deep looking, all revealing the power of fruitful reflection (how to ask your inner questions). We will also have joyful opportunities to chant and sing, led by Simon, along with daily guided discussions. There will be time for rest, walks or body treatments in the afternoons.
If you have not yet attended a spiritual retreat, please know that we have a strict rule of no drugs or alcohol. We would also remind you that this is a spiritual retreat, not a psychological workshop. We expect participants to welcome periods of silence and to be well enough to support others with quiet listening and consideration at all times. For details of body treatment possibilities outside teaching or community times, please contact Mana directly.
Rev Dr Stephanie Dowrick has been teaching at Mana since 2000. She is the author of many widely published books including Intimacy and Solitude, Forgiveness and Other Acts of Love, In the Company of Rilke, The Universal Heart, Seeking the Sacred, Creative Journal Writing, Everyday Kindness, Heaven on Earth. She has been leading “Interfaith in Sydney” services and events, along with Dr Kim Cunio, since 2006. There are many inspirational talks from Stephanie available via the Interfaith in Sydney YouTube link. Stephanie is also a social activist, writing regularly for the Sydney Morning Herald on ethical and social/political matters. Plus you can follow her on Twitter or via her public Facebook page. In her earlier London life, she was the co-founder and first Managing Director of the ground-breaking feminist publishing house, The Women’s Press. A mother and grandmother, she is a trained psychotherapist, an ordained interfaith minister, a writing mentor and teacher, and has spoken at 100s of public events. Teaching at Mana, she says, has a unique, utterly precious part in her life.
Stephanie is delighted to be supported this Easter by Simon Harger-Forde, well known for his dynamic, loving social and spiritual leadership and his musical and creative gifts. Simon is a skilled facilitator, spiritual explorer and social change leader. He has attended a number of Mana Retreats with Stephanie, now co-leads the Auckland Spiritual Community, along with Rev Hilary Star and Deborah Sim, and recently spent sabbatical time with the Corrymeela Community (Ireland) and Taizé (France). Simon trained in social work, has worked in health leadership and strategy roles and most recently led a social innovation organisation bringing the lived experience of people’s lives to the heart of care and policy.
